Series 10 Episode 2 – Another Case Of Van Blank

At the start of this episode, we see Arthur visit Wally at his Pass’n’Go driving school – opposite number 30 and Pennard Mansions on Goldhawk Road.

 

If you watch carefully in this short scene you can clearly see some interested on-lookers in the background.

 

DRIVING TO DOVER – THEN & NOW

At 08m49s, after Arthur has told Dave to climb aboard, we see Arthur, Ray & Dave driving along this road towards Dover. This is not far from the lockup.

 

CROSSING THE CHANNEL – THEN & NOW 

DOVER FERRY PORT, DOVER 

At 09m21s, the van reaches the port of Dover, and around 12 minutes we get a view of the white cliffs from on board the ferry.

 

DISEMBARKING & HEADING TO CALAIS – THEN & NOW  

QUAI DE LA LOIRE/RUE DU QUAI DE LA LOIRE, PORT OF CALAIS, 62100 CALAIS 

At 12m58s we see the first shots of the port of Calais. Filmed in 1993 much redevelopment has taken place here, making this location almost unrecognisable. However, the same building is clearly visible in both shots.

 

As they turn around on Quai De La Loire, you can just about see Calais town hall on the left of the shot, along with a lamppost and a warehouse in the background that still exist in the more recent shot.

 

CHEZ MADELAINE/TOWN SQUARE – THEN & NOW  

PLACE CRÈVECOEUR/RUE RÉAUMUR, 62100 CALAIS 

At 13m42s, upon arrival in Calais, Arthur, Ray & Dave look for the café to meet Henry and stand on Place Crèvecoeur near Rue Babinet.

They then walk across the car parking area and approach Chez Madelaine.

 

Eventually they end up in Chez Madelaine – on the corner of Rue Réaumur, known for many years as ‘Café De L’Union’ and by 2016 a Boutique.

 

With Arthur, Ray and Dave inside Chez Madelaine Henry drives along Rue Laffitte, now closed to traffic and turns left into Place Crèvecoeur before stopping outide café Jean Bart looking for Arthur.

 

The same location also features later in the episode as Arthur & Ray return and Arthur’s police convoy returns to the police station.

 

CALAIS OUEST, MAMMOTH HYPERMARKET – THEN & NOW 

PORT GIS NEZ ENTRANCE, AUCHAN COMPLEX, AVENUE ROGER SALENGRO, ROUTE DE BOULOGNE (RN1), COQUELLES, 62100 CALAIS 

At 18m57s Ray & Dave are seen leaving a Mammoth Hypermarket where Ray asks Dave if Arthur has ever played away.

This area has been redeveloped slightly since filming but the surrounding restaurant buildings confirm this is the exact location.

 

MISSING THE FERRY – THEN & NOW 

ACCUEIL CAMPING-CARS/MOTORHOME AREA, DIGUE GASTON BERTHE, AVENUE RAYMOND POINCARÉ, 62100 CALAIS 

At 21m10s after Ray & Dave have finally grabbed Arthur from Chez Madelaine, we are treated to this wonderful sight of all three missing the last ferry of the day.

This area is seconds away from ‘Le Sybilian’ restaurant where Arthur is first seen driving with Henry to the scene of the robbery.

 

LOOKING FOR A HOTEL/HOTEL L’OVALE – THEN & NOW  

AVENUE DU PRÉSIDENT WILSON/NR RUE GARIBALDI, 62100 CALAIS 

At 21m45s at the start of part two, the van is seen driving along this street near Calais town hall as Arthur, Ray & Dave look for a hotel to stay in.

 

HOTEL BASTILLE/OVERNIGHT STAY – THEN & NOW  

21/23 RUE GARIBALDI/RUE DE LA PASSERELLE, 62100 CALAIS 

At 21m46s at the start of part two, Arthur, Ray & Dave finally find a hotel to stay in Calais overnight and drive along Rue De La Passerelle.

 

At 24m53s they leave the hotel to discover the van has been broken into and we see a view from the corner of Rue Garibaldi.

 

Arthur then tells Ray & Dave that unfortunately his insurance policy won’t be covering the cost of the theft from the van.

 

POLICE STATION ‘HOTEL DE POLICE’ – THEN & NOW  

PLACE DE LORRAINE NR RUE DE MARÉCHAUX, 62100 CALAIS 

At 26m05s, after the van is broken into, Arthur, Ray and Dave go to the local police station to report the crime.

 

At 42m21s, Ray and Dave return to the police station with Madelaine in her car, and drive along Rue de Maréchaux just alongside the police station.

 

SPLITTING UP/TOWN HALL – THEN & NOW  

MAIRIE, PLACE DE SOLDAT INCONNU, 62100 CALAIS 

At 29m09s, they leave the police station and go here where Ray suggests finding a nice cafe and having a drink to salvage one good memory from the whole expedition.

 

As Arthur decides to see Henry and they agree to meet later, Arthur reminds Dave that he hasn’t got any money.

A frustrated Dave tells Arthur that he will pay him back as soon as they return to England.

 

RAY AND DAVE GO FOR DINNER – THEN & NOW  

11 RUE DE LA MER (MORE RECENTLY ‘LE SIXTIES’), 62100 CALAIS 

At 31 minutes Ray and Dave are at this restaurant/bar, with a view of the 13th century watch tower in the background on Place d’Armes.

At 33m16s we see the view of Rue De La Mer opposite from inside the restaurant.

Ray then asks Dave about the story of how Arthur and ‘er indoors got together.

 

ARTHUR DRIVES WITH HENRY 1 – THEN & NOW  

AVENUE RAYMOND POINCARÉ, 62100 CALAIS 

At 31m41s, after trying to salvage a deal, Arthur drives Henry in the van here, passing the ‘Le Sybilian’ restaurant and Henry reminds Arthur to drive on the right.

This location is seconds away from the seafront where Arthur, Ray & Dave all miss the final ferry of the day (see above).

 

ARTHUR DRIVES WITH HENRY 2 – THEN & NOW

At 32m06s, Arthur & Henry are driving along the seafront where Henry offers Arthur beta-blockers.

 

ARTHUR DRIVES WITH HENRY 3 – COLLECTING LOUIS – THEN & NOW  

RUE DE LA MER, RUE DE LA MARINE (NR RUE VIGIER), SANGATTE, 62100 CALAIS 

At 32m21s, Arthur & Henry arrive here and collect Louis from a beach chalet.

As he approaches the car park we catch a brief glimpse of the narrow street (Rue Del La Marine) directly behind the van.

 

ARTHUR DRIVES WITH HENRY 4 – BRIDGE – THEN & NOW  

ROUTE DE GUÎNES (D127), L’ÉCLUSE, 62137 COULOGNE 

At 34 minutes, Arthur & Henry cross a bridge, turning from Route De Guînes into Rue de l’Ecluse Carrée (D247E1).

They cross the ‘Canal de Calais à Guînes’ and on the other side of the bridge, another car follows them.

 

Another car then crosses the bridge which we later discover belongs to the French police. The structure above the bridge no longer exists here.

 

ROBBING THE FACTORY – THEN & NOW  

COOPÉRATIVE AGRICOLE LA FLANDRE, 28 RUE DE GUIZELIN, 62340 GUÎNES 

At 34m45s, Arthur & Henry’s men arrive at the factory, unaware that the police have followed them there.

As Arthur pulls up alongside, Henry is quick to settle up while his men load the booze into the van.

Moments later the police arrive and Arthur, Henry and the gang are all arrested.

 

ARTHUR SAYS GOODBYE TO MADELAINE – THEN & NOW  

PORT DE CALAIS, NR AVENUE DU COMMANDANT COUSTEAU, CALAIS 

At 46 minutes, Arthur says goodbye to Madelaine here and informs her that ‘Daley into Europe’ might be taking less of a hands-on approach in Europe from now on.
